An opportunity from the Americans for the Arts Emerging Leaders Listserv:
Hi,
I’ve followed discussions on the listserv with interest and based on what I’ve read, thought that you would be interested in “Performing the World 2010,” a really unique conference that I have attended since it began seven years ago. I especially think PTW would be of interest/value to anyone interested in how performance/the arts/culture can be of value to helping people to grow and develop themselves and their communities. Performing the World takes place in New York City Sept 30-Oct 3, 2010.
The theme of the 2010 conference is “Can Performance Change the World?”
I know from my own experience as a theater director, activist and organizer that there are real divides between people who do cultural work and those who do ‘political’ work. I strongly believe we don’t have to make a separation between the two and that continuing this division is preventing, not only progressives but ordinary people across the globe, from creating more humanistic approaches to poverty, oppression and suffering.
What I love about Performing the World is that it brings together hundreds of people from around the world, not on the basis of professional or political identity or academic discipline but rather around their common involvement in performance as an activity of growth and development. I guarantee that even the most experienced conference goer has never seen anything like it!
The “Call for Proposals” (due March 1, 2010) and more information about the conference is available at www.performingtheworld.org. I can also be helpful if you have questions.
Even if you aren’t interested in the conference, I’d love to hear how you think about these issues!
Enjoy the holidays!
