MUSEUM EDUCATOR

The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine is an exceptional learning resource for students of all ages. Its Department of Public Education & Visitor Services, a secular department of the Cathedral, seeks part-time educators during the 2010-2011 academic year.

* Responsibilities:
Educators will collaborate with Public Education Staff to provide programs for student groups (pre-school through college), adult groups, and families. Secular, curriculum-based programs are taught in the Cathedral with emphasis on such topics as the Middle Ages, Architecture, World Religions, Geometry, Ecology, and Literature. A variety of related hands-on activities such as stone carving, weaving, architectural elevations and models, book making, and illuminations are led in the department’s Art Workshops. Opportunities exist for greeting choirs and instrumental groups performing in the Cathedral, as well as for educational program and material expansion. Some administrative work might also be necessary.

* Qualifications:
Successful candidate must have a bachelor’s degree and at least two years of teaching experience in the classroom or the museum setting, and be comfortable working with diverse audiences, especially K-12 students. A master’s degree in education, museum education, museum studies, or a related field – or working toward such a degree – is preferred. Must have knowledge of child development, inquiry-based teaching strategies, and NYC schools and curricula. Excellent communication and organizational skills are also required. Candidate will be a self-starter, highly organized, and able to work both independently and as part of a team. Must have a flexible schedule and be available at least 3-4 days per week and occasional weekends.

* Schedule:
Educators will work approximately 5-15 hours per week. Commitment through the 2010-2011 academic year is required.
