Free Arts NYC is a non-profit, volunteer driven organization that provides a unique combination of arts education and mentoring programs to under-served city youth and families. We partner with group homes, shelters, schools and community centers to give children the opportunity to express themselves in a supportive environment in order to develop communication and trust. Our programs and the relationships they foster help children and families experience new levels of hope and creativity.
Currently, Free Arts NYC is recruiting volunteer art mentors to serve in our 2010 Weekly Mentor Program, particularly in our afternoon programs (evening opportunities are also available). Our programs are a great way to give back to New York while doing something you love – engaging in art and creativity!
The Weekly Mentor Program (WMP) is a 25-week arts-based mentoring program providing youth aged 6-13 with regular opportunities to express themselves creatively and engage with positive adult role models. Led by a Professional Facilitator, teams of volunteer mentors use Free Arts NYC’s theme-based visual arts curricula to lead youth through creating and discussing visual art projects – a process that acts as a catalyst, helping youth to strengthen critical communication and social skills and to build positive relationships with their mentors and peers.
Time Commitment: 2.5 hours for one afternoon (3:30-6pm) or evening (6-8:30pm) per week, for 1 semester (12 weeks) or 1 academic year (25 weeks).
Locations: Brooklyn, Bronx and Manhattan
High priority will be given to volunteers with afternoon availability!
All volunteer commitments will begin in September. New volunteers will be interviewed & trained in the summer.
