The Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the music and heritage of big band Latin Jazz, supporting its performance for new audiences, and educating young people in the understanding and performance of this important cultural treasure. The Alliance maintains a world-class collection of Latin jazz musical scores and recordings, provides institutional support for the GRAMMY Award-winning Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra (ALJO), and provides education programs for young musicians and new audiences.

The ALJA is seeking ambitious, highly-motivated, organized, and detail-oriented individuals at the undergraduate or graduate level with an interest in arts administration to assist the Executive Director as needed for twenty hours a week. Internships are unpaid but provide a unique opportunity to learn about and be directly involved in all facets of arts administration, including marketing, public relations, development, programming, concert production, education, archiving, and strategic planning. Candidates must receive academic credit from their educational institution for the internship.

Responsibilities

  • Interface with the Executive Director, Artistic Director, and Board of Directors concerning all matters related to the ALJA
  • Help produce the ALJO’s season at Symphony Space
  • Assist in crafting and executing marketing and public relations plans for concerts
  • Be involved in all development activities, including government and foundation grant writing, prospecting donors, researching corporate sponsorship opportunities, and assisting with special events
  • Provide administrative support for the ALJA’s educational programs
  • Manage online social networking platforms to promote the ALJA

Skills/Knowledge

  • Excellent time management, planning, and organizational skills
  • Well developed interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral
  • Experience with grant writing
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Knowledge of non-profit arts administration and the New York arts environment
  • Interest in Latin jazz, music, and the arts

Qualifications

  • Must be currently enrolled in a related graduate or undergraduate program, preferably in arts administration
  • Work and internship experience in the arts, education, and non-profits desirable
