by Sam Lipsyte
This latest slice of mucked-up life follows Milo Burke, a washed-up painter living in Astoria, Queens, with his wife and three-year-old son, as he’s jerked in and out of employment at a mediocre university where Milo and his equally jaded cohorts solicit funding from the Asks, or those who financially support the art program. This takes a tone of lucid lament to the devastated white-collar sector; in its merciless assault on the duel between privilege and expectation, it arrives at a rare articulation of empire in decline. (304 pages)

by Laura Fredericks
This thoroughly revised and updated edition of the best-selling book The Ask is filled with suggestions, guidelines, and down-to-earth advice that will give you the confidence to ask anyone for any size gift, for any purpose. Written in winning language, filled with sample dialogues, and offering a wealth of tips and tools, this book addresses common mistakes made when asking and shows how to correct each mistake, providing guidance and direction on how to make a great ask. by Tyler Cowen
According to Cowen, human brains are constantly absorbing bits of information that get smaller and are delivered faster as technology advances. The more information people receive, the more they crave—this shorter attention span is far from a flaw to the author, but a liberating mechanism that allows humans time to contemplate more ambitious, long-range pursuits. The relentless analysis is occasionally overwhelming, but Cowen’s illustration of our neurological filing system may help readers understand the mass consumption of information and just about everything else. by Scott Eblin
After the thrill of promotion to an executive position comes the sobering reality of just how difficult it is to succeed at this level–and how hard it can be to find help. Some 40 percent of new executives don’t last 18 months. Why? Scott Eblin shows that it’s because in order to succeed at the Next Level, you need to adopt new behaviors and beliefs, and, more important, let go of old ones. (240 pages)

by Dan Gillmor
Gillmor shows how anyone can produce the news, using personal blogs, Internet chat groups, email, and a host of other tools. He sends a wake-up call to newsmakers-politicians, business executives, celebrities-and the marketers and PR flacks who promote them. He explains how to successfully play by the rules of this new era and shift from “control” to “engagement.” And he makes a strong case to his fell journalists that, in the face of a plethora of Internet-fueled news vehicles, they must change or become irrelevant. (336 pages)

The venue was awarded the ‘Building Brooklyn Award’, nominated for the Municipal Art Society’s ‘MASterwork Award’, and awarded “Best New Art Space” by the New York Press. Galapagos does not accept government grants or public funding of any kind. Elmes writes that “if the work we present is strong, communicative, and effective work, we will survive. This is New York City. One of the greatest cultural cities to ever have risen, perhaps the greatest. As cultural leaders in New York City we can’t simply be placeholders, bystanders in the midst of what others before us have built – we have to lead.”

In recent years, New York City has become a major locus for exploring the role of art in public spaces, art as public space, and the art of public space. These valuable initiatives represent not only a means for engaging and developing vibrant communities, but give us new ways to think about managing the arts. For this Creative Conversation, four local champions in public art practice shared behind-the-scenes cases of projects they have managed; reflected on motivations, strategies for success, and lessons learned as advocates for dynamic, livable cities.

Panelists: David Koren, Executive Producer, Figment Lauren Ross, Curator and Director of Arts Programs, The High Line Representative from Department of Transportation, Urban Art Program

Arts & Business Council of New York is planning a learning event for late June 2010 about arts administration career strategies. ELNYA has hosted similar events in the past but this year we’re hoping to engage both emerging and established professionals as well as job seekers and hiring managers in lively and practical conversation.

We intend to invite 3-4 guests with expertise in career strategy or talent management to discuss topics our participants define as most useful for them. Please take a minute and tell us what career topics you want to learn about and what speakers you’d like to hear from using this form: http://tinyurl.com/arts-admin-career-workshop.

Thanks for your input!

WHEN: Monday March 1, 2010
WHERE: WNYC’s Jerome L. Greene Space, 44 Charlton Street, Manhattan

When we talk about the challenges of sustaining our arts institutions and a place for the arts in our cultural landscape, we regularly return to the importance of education–in terms of creating new audiences, fostering artistic development, and training new leaders in the field. At the beginning of a new decade we asked which topics today will become the backbone of arts education in the future. This conversation featured three NYC leaders in arts education challenged to consider ‘hot topics’ in the field of arts education.

Some questions we asked were:

What will a successful arts education initiative in 2020 look like? What is the role of digital media in the future of learning strategies and audience engagement? How can local community engagement through the arts result in a deeper national investment in the arts? How will funding priorities – public and private – in arts education continue to shift? When do we invest in general arts appreciation and when do we focus on audience development for a specific organization? How will the increasing focus on assessment and evaluation change the way we learn about and participate in the arts?
Panelist bios:

Catherine Fukushima is both an experienced arts administrator with a background developing programs for two major art museums; and a strategic grantmaker, having managed philanthropic investments in the arts across the county for the New York-based Wallace Foundation. As a senior program officer for Wallace, Catherine was responsible for advancing two initiatives: the Wallace Excellence Awards that sought to build participation in the arts, and Arts for Young People that helps cities make systemic improvements to enable them to provide high quality arts education on a more equitable basis.

Prior to joining Wallace, Catherine was a museum educator at The Metropolitan Museum of Art where she oversaw programs and publications for K-12 teachers. Before joining the Met, she was Manager of School, Youth and Family Programs at the Brooklyn Museum. She began her museum career at the American Folk Art Museum.
