This spring discover a new method for theater creation by participating in Moisés Kaufman’s Tectonic Theater Project Moment Work classes. This technique has been utilized to build and/or direct such renowned pieces as The Laramie Project, Gross Indecency, I Am My Own Wife, One Arm, and Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, and has guided the Tony-winning and nominated performances of actors Jane Fonda and Jefferson Mays.

Through these classes, students have the opportunity to work with Moisés Kaufman and company members of Tectonic Theater Project in a series of one or two workshops, and be trained in this unique approach to theatrical production, incorporating performance, design, movement, and text. As described by founding company member, Andy Paris, “Moment Work at its fundamental level is a technique for theatrical exploration. We can define a moment by simply saying ‘I begin’ and ‘I end.’… ‘I begin’ and ‘I end’ are bookends, and whatever happens in between those bookends is the moment. As you start to get immersed in the technique you begin to see the endless creative possibilities and expressions in telling a story.”

You can check out Moment Work in practice by watching our video (http://vimeo.com/user11206422 ).

Interested? Please contact Andrew Zoppa at Andrewz@tectonictheaterproject.org or by calling 212-579-6111 .

Level I – Introduction to Moment Work

May 14-16, 10am-6pm, Roundabout Theater Studios

An intensive workshop structured over 3 days

Course Description:

Level I: Exploring the elements of the stage: an intensive hands-on introduction to Moment Work. In this workshop, students actively engage with the elements of the stage – exploring lights, sound, costumes, movement, text, architecture and others elements – to discover their full theatrical potential and the poetry inherent in each element. This experiment in theatrical language and form encourages students to think theatrically, to unlock their theatrical imagination, and to discover the multitude of ways that the elements of the stage can communicate. Students are taught to analyze and critique the work from a structuralist perspective.

The workshop culminates in a presentation of all the Moments created over the course of the weekend

Level II – Advanced Moment Work

May 17-20, 10am-6pm, Roundabout Theatre Studios

Structured over 4 days

Level II: How to use the Moment Work technique

This workshop is for students who have completed the Level I Moment Work training. Level II is centered around the theatrical impulses and ideas of the students. It encourages an active dialogue between the student’s theatrical ideas and the elements of the stage. Starting with a piece of text, a simple phrase of music, an image, or a body of research, the focus of this workshop is to continue the exploration of the elements of the stage, applying them to the specific challenges of making their own work.

The goal of the workshop is to help students build a solid foundation with the Moment Work technique and to gain dexterity in using all of the elements of the stage to articulate their theatrical ideas. Students become adept at discoursing with the stage, analyzing their work, and learning to “read back” what it is they are making and communicating. This workshop culminates in a presentation of the Moments created, organized using simple structural exercises.

One Year Lease Theater Company is now accepting applications for our 2012 Summer Apprentice Program!

Every year One Year Lease invites 10 to 12 college students interested in furthering their practical study in performing, directing and theatre making to join our annual company residency in Papingo, Greece. Apprentices spend three weeks building, rehearsing and designing a project based on an ancient myth or old story, culminating in a week of performances presented throughout the villages of the Zagorohoria region.

Under the guidance and mentorship of OYL’s artistic directors, performers and dramaturgs, in addition to Vassar College Professor of Drama Gabrielle Cody and distinguished guest artists, these young theater artists experience the process of theater-making from the ground up, while engaging with the culture and beauty of northern Greece.

We are very excited to announce that the theme of our 2012 summer residency is: Dionysus, Desire and the Myth of the Bacchae.

Inspired by OYL’s continued interested in the enduring legacy of this most sensational of classical Greek Myths, the 2012 apprentice company will investigate the theatricality, allure and relevance of Dionysus and his Bacchinal.

After a week spent under the guidance of Professor Gabrielle Cody, engaging their new environment and developing a vocabulary for collaboration, the apprentice company will, as an ensemble, devise a new project inspired by this central myth. Their work will be bolstered by daily trainings with the OYL ensemble and intensive master-classes. We are thrilled to announce that this summer Drama Desk nominated theater director Kim Weild (www.kimweild.com) will be taking on this role, leading classes and helping the Apprentice Company construct their project.

The program will conclude with a week of performances across the villages of Zagorohoria, where students will experience the thrill and challenge of performing for a non-English speaking audience. Using found texts surrounding the myth (to be provided by One Year Lease), students will be asked to integrate the experiences of their summer into a production that transcends the confines of traditional story-telling and communicates in a language of its own.

In addition to intensive theater training the program includes a substantial amount of physical exercise, rigorous mountain hikes, a guided tour and performance at the famous ancient amphitheater at Epidaurus, a day trip to the Vergina museum which houses the royal tombs of King Phillip II, and a day at the beach located at the mythological site of the River Styx.

Please feel free to visit our website (http://oneyearlease.org/apprentice.php) or contact Amanda Culp at amanda[at]oneyearlease[dot]org with any further questions!

Modern-Day Griot Theatre Company is an interdisciplinary, experimental theatre that is dedicated to moving the story forward by using the storytelling art-form of the West African Griot. Right now, we are in the process of producing our new work called “In Our Home”; a completely interdisciplinary, interactive theatre project which is set in an actual home.

Each playwright of color is assigned a room in a house to write a 10 minute scene (one artist; one room). Performances are in each of the rooms of the house. The titles of each scene will be: “In the Bedroom”; “In the Kitchen”; “In the Bathroom”; and “In the Living Room”. The scenes would run simultaneously and at the end of each scene, the audience of 5 to 7 people will be ushered into the next room by a facilitator where the next scene will begin. There will be no more than 15 people at a given performance (including facilitators and crew) and the performance as a whole will run for 45 minutes at most (the entire rental per evening will be 4 hours – from setup to break down & clean up).

We are currently looking for home in the Brooklyn area (preferably near accessible transportation) and would like to utilize the space during the weekends of June 22 -23 and June 29-30, 2012 at $400 a weekend.

Altough you may think we need a big home with big rooms, that is not necessarily the case. We need to home that will allow us to explore the intimacy of relationships that exists behind closed doors; giving the audience an unvarnished and nuanced view of domesticity that one seldom sees. We want the audience to feel as though they are a part of the story; as though they are family or a fly on the wall. This experimental piece will also allow the actors the ability to expose a part of their souls in a setting where on is usually comfortable in being themselves. Aside from the acting, the writing and the set design; we want the home will have a character all its own.

If you are interested, please contact me ( contactus@moderndaygriot.org) so we can discuss further.

Thank you.
